The History of Winston-Salem’s Own Mr. Barbecue

A Tradition of Excellence Since 1962.
Mr. Barbecue opened its doors in 1962 when brothers Andy and Nick Carros (pictured above) decided to bring real Lexington-style barbecue to Winston-Salem.
In 1965, the food went from great to unforgettable when Joe Pope (above right) and Leo Miller, legendary NC pitmasters, joined the team and shared their award-winning recipes. Those same recipes are still at the heart of our menu today.
Mr. Barbecue remains a true family business. Nick and Andy’s sons, both named Jimmy(!), now lead the restaurant and carry forward the same passion for serving world-class barbecue that their fathers started with.
Tried-and-True and All About You!
We use only select hickory wood in our pits and slow-cook our pork to tender, smoky perfection.
Nearly everything you enjoy here is made from scratch: from the hush puppies and banana pudding to our famous sweet tea, it is all prepared fresh the day you order it.
For us, it is about more than great food. It is about offering you our very best in service, value, and a place that feels like home.
